Family & Friends,
I suppose it doesn't really count as travel, but I traveled for a day to Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Reserve for a rainy day hiking adventure, of which I care to share.
It was raining all day, but we decided to suit up and go hiking anyway. It meant that we were the only ones on the trail. After about an hour and a half of hiking downhill, we reached Purisima Creek, which was surging from the rain water. Normally (I am told), the creek is overrun by newts, which was the main reason I wanted to go on this hike. Because of the water surge, we didn't see any newts down by the creek, but we did get to cross a precarious piece of wood to step onto a small "island" in the creek where there were huge, slippery mushrooms.
We eventually found two newts further up the hill. The first, who I named Newtie Pick, is featured in the video below. The second newt (his brother, we concluded) I named Cutie Pick. We also saw a grand total of four banana slugs!
The hike back was entirely uphill, but we worked those glutes and managed to beat the night darkness.
Since it was raining, I only brought my GoPro, which isn't the best camera in low light, so the photos below are quite degraded. But you can still see little Newtie!
Onward,
Chris
